Restoring a 1968 Porsche 911L

And into June we continue the quest to repair the front suspension pan along with a host of other things. There are quite a few areas of rusted out metal that will have to be replaced and this is pushing back our schedule for getting the pan in.

Here is the new suspension pan being prepared for it's final journey into the front area. Beautiful piece of metal by Restoration Designs. Although you can't see it, this entire section has rusted out underneath the fuel tank support. Donor car will provide the needed metal. Here is a close up of that rusted section.

Here is a shot from underneath. The tube sticking out is for the headlight wiring harness. The metal isn't good enough to support it so it's coming out too! Another long weekend .... Here is Rick removing the tar like substance used as undercoating. This is really the only way to do this. Chemicals only make a mess.

The trick is to get the panel hot and then wait a few seconds and the stuff just lifts off. After he gets it off he uses a 3M green bristle disc to bring the metal to a nice shine. Perfect for a thick coat of Zerorust. Here is what the inside fender wells look like when he's done.

Here is my dad doing his fair share. A closeup of how much fun it is to do this stuff.... The interior get's worked on every weekend. A little here and there and it's coming along.
