Restoring a 1968 Porsche 911L

Well March started out pretty nice with some good weather and both of us pushing hard to take care of one last major problem, the left rear quarter panel. The car had been hit in the early 70's and whoever did the body work was less than good at it. The bondo was so heavy a paint thickness gauge wouldn't even register on that side of the car. Not that that's too big a deal as the factory did their fair share of filler work but not to the depth that these clowns achieved. Anyway, as you will see we had much to learn and bit off quite a bit on this project. This is part 1 .....

We made a trip to Part's Heaven and got Eddie to cut us up half a rear quarter from a 68' 912. Here's Eddie doin his thing. We brought it back home and Rick went to work cutting out the spot welds to remove the lockpost and fender from the inner panels.

Here is Rick stripping the fender bare. This is what we were replacing. The pot marks are from where the body guys pounded the dents out. We figured we'd just replace the bad area. Here is Rick giving you an idea of what we were replacing.

We used the old section as a template to cut the new one. Here is the fender after we cut the old stuff out. Here I am cutting and fitting the lockpost and front fender half.

Here it is clamped in for final checking. Here it is tack welded on. Here it is with the welding almost done.

This is Rick grinding down the welds. This is where things started to go wrong .... Rick grinding away. It seams we warped the panel from too much heat. Probably a combination of welding and grinding. The seam "dove" and we were not interested in filling it with bondo ... again!
