Restoring a 1968 Porsche 911L

As September moves on we race to get the metal coated before the cold comes. We used a metal coating called ZeroRust to coat all the bare metal that was in exposed areas of the body. Basically the backs of all panels will be coated with this stuff. ZeroRust is a modified alkyd style enamel. It's very similiar to the older style paints used for many years on tractors and stuff but it's properties have been modifed in such a way as to make it have an affinity for metal surfaces. If there is rust on a panel it will actually stop the rusting process by sealing out all moisture and air. The interior surfaces of the car will be painted with ZeroRust too (just not on this day!). Once the ZeroRust fully cures (about 3 weeks) all of the areas will be shot with Wurth SKS underbody coating for rock chip protection. This was a major accomplishment that we had been talking about for months. We are racing to beat the cold weather.

Here's Rick with Ken's dad figuring out how to drop the rear suspension. The first half of the day consisted of grinding the bottom floor pan and front suspension area clean. Here's Rick grinding away.

Mark and Rick going at the pan with their grinders. Not very fun and very messy. The results of all that messy work. The end result is gleaming bare metal.

Another shot while waiting for the 1st coat to flash off. Another front view. Here's Ken shooting the black coat of ZeroRust.

Finishing up the last coat of black on the bottom pan. The car looks brand new with the ZeroRust on it. Done for the day. The ZeroRust, once cured, will protect this cars metal for a very long time.
