Restoring a 1968 Porsche 911L

To our amazement, Jay from Jay's Precision machine called us in late Sept to tell us that the machine work on the motor was nearly finished! We stopped by to take a look and sure enough. Looks like we will have a motor after all. As for the rest of the project, we finally got the car prepared for primer surfacer and began shooting polyester to build up the surface for final finishing. We began block sanding the primer on most of the major parts and the body. Most of these pics took place in Sept and early Oct 04. Enjoy.

Here are the new pistons and the newly machined cylinders and flywheel. Cleaned, rebushed and refurbished rods. Cleaned cylinder heads with new valve guides installed. All valves, rocker arms and rocker bushings are new.

Here is Ken shooting polyester spray filler on the drivers door. This door was pretty messed up originally. Squirting the drivers side quarter panel. And the passenger side quarter....

Once a good build of surfacer is built up, the block sanding process begins. Messy as all hell not to mention dangerous to your health! The car is dusted with graphite powder and block sanded multiple times to get a dead flat surface. We started this in Oct and were just now finishing up (mar 05). A shot from behind after a good coat of poly has been built up.

After a few blocking sessions we can see low spots and areas of bare metal. These get epoxy and then another coat of poly. Clean crisp lines after hours and hours of blocking sanding. Another good shot of the nicely blocked rear quarter. The yellow epoxy is covering bare metal high spots.

Here is a door at the beginning of a block session. You can see the low spots as the guide coat is removed. This is what your shooting for. A mirror surface. A lot of hard work, sweat and patience! Here the roof is completed and looks very nice.

Good rear quarter view of blocked out fender. Still a bit to go on this.
